Malaria is present in the islands, but the risk in Mansuar, Kri, Gam and Arborek is relatively low due to the absence of large numbers of human carriers and low mosquito populations.
Example: we have lived here for several years and have never been ill from malaria, but of course this is no guarantee that you will not get malaria.
Our advice
Even though the risk is very low, we recommend wearing repellant and appropriate clothing to avoid bites. Mosquito repellent is available in almost every supermarket in Waisai, but not on all other islands.
Anti-malarial medications
We are not doctors so please consult your local health service, many local government health services recommend anti-malarial medications.
Doxycycline is often recommended as a good antimalarial it also providing protection against certain other bacterial infections.
